Tragic Custody Death Sparks Investigation in Fiji

A post-mortem examination was carried out on the farmer Marika Radua, who passed away while allegedly in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. Mr. Radua, a resident of Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, died on Tuesday after reportedly being assaulted by another inmate in the cell block.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander in the North, confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Radua’s death. SSP Baledrokadroka stated that further information would be provided once the investigation is completed.

The Fiji Police Force had released an earlier statement indicating that Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew directed the CID to look into the incident. Following the assault, police officers transported Mr. Radua to Savusavu Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to Naviavia Village advisory councillor Marika Sade, Mr. Radua was arrested around 6 AM on Tuesday after allegedly setting a family house on fire in the early hours. The tragedy has taken a significant toll on Mr. Radua’s family; his mother is reportedly in distress after losing both her home and her son in such a short period. She is currently staying with relatives as she copes with the loss.
