A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday for Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, who died on Tuesday under controversial circumstances while in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. According to reports, Radua suffered injuries allegedly inflicted by another inmate within the cell block.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, confirmed that a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated an inquiry into the incident. “Once CID officers complete their work, we will provide further updates,” SSP Baledrokadroka stated.

In a preliminary statement, the Fiji Police Force shared that Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew had ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. Police were reported to have quickly transported Radua to Savusavu Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Naviavia Village advisory councillor Marika Sade indicated that Radua was arrested early Tuesday morning for allegedly setting a family home ablaze around 3 a.m. The local community is also grappling with the impact of the tragedy, as Sade noted the emotional distress faced by Radua’s mother, who not only lost her son but also her home in the same week. She is currently staying with relatives for support.

This tragic incident highlights the need for careful oversight within detention facilities to ensure inmate safety, even as investigations are underway. The community’s mourning serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact of loss.

The story serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities involved in law enforcement and the serious implications that can arise from conflicts within custody scenarios. As authorities continue their investigation, there is a hopeful expectation that the findings will lead to improved practices and a greater commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in custody.
