A 27-year-old man tragically lost his life in a serious road accident in Rakiraki early this morning. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, who is the Director of Traffic for the Fiji Police Force, the victim was a passenger in a vehicle with two others being driven by a 28-year-old man.
The incident occurred around 3am as the group was traveling from Rakiraki to Nalawa. It is reported that the driver was unable to navigate a bend, leading the vehicle to leave the roadway and collide with a roadside market.
All individuals involved were taken to Rakiraki Hospital, where the victim was sadly pronounced dead. The driver and one passenger received treatment and were subsequently discharged, while another passenger was transferred to Lautoka Hospital for further care.
SSP Divuana confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and noted that the current road death toll stands at 38, a decrease compared to 62 fatalities reported during the same period last year.
