A woman in her 70s has tragically lost her life following a car accident on Viseisei Bypass Road in Vuda, Lautoka, on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, reported that the deceased was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old woman, who is now considered the suspect in the incident.
According to initial investigations, the suspect reportedly lost control of her vehicle, leading it off the road where it collided with a post. The impact subsequently caused the vehicle to swing back onto the road, where it struck another vehicle.
The suspect is currently receiving treatment at Lautoka Hospital, while the driver and passenger of the second vehicle involved were unharmed.
SSP Divuana emphasized that speeding appeared to be the primary cause of the accident, reiterating the importance of adhering to speed limits for the safety of all road users.
The victim’s family has opted not to give interviews to the media, as it is believed that the suspect is related to them.
Police have reported that the current road death toll stands at 37, a notable decrease from 60 recorded during the same timeframe last year.
