A tragic motor vehicle accident in Nasinu early this morning has led to the death of a man in his 30s. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the incident took place near the Nasinu road junction shortly after 3 a.m. The victim was en route to Suva when his vehicle collided with another car driven by another man in his 30s traveling in the opposite direction.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Ongoing investigations aim to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate accident.
In light of this tragedy, the Director of Traffic has emphasized the importance of road safety and urged drivers to remain vigilant. Despite continuous reminders from road safety advocates, SSP Divuana expressed concern over the high number of traffic violations recorded daily, indicating that many road users may not be heeding safety advisories.
He highlighted that complacency can lead to fatal consequences and encouraged all drivers to embrace a safer mindset for their well-being, especially as they approach the festive season. The current road death toll stands at 46, a notable decrease compared to 68 at the same time last year, suggesting that awareness efforts may be having a positive impact.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for heightened awareness and adherence to road safety protocols. By prioritizing safety over complacency, we can work towards reducing road accidents and ensuring that everyone can enjoy a safe and celebratory festive season.
The lives lost in such incidents are tragic, but with collective effort, there is hope for improved road safety and fewer fatalities in the future.
