A 17-year-old juvenile has been further remanded following charges related to a tragic incident on Bau Road that resulted in the deaths of two men over the weekend. The young driver appeared in the Nausori Magistrates Court facing multiple charges: two counts of dangerous driving causing death, driving without a valid license, and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

The investigation revealed that the accused allegedly took the keys to a government vehicle while his father was asleep. While driving along Bau Road, he struck two men who were standing by the roadside. After the collision, he reportedly fled the scene, but later informed his father, who subsequently contacted the authorities.

The victims, both men in their 40s, were transported to the Naurosi Health Center, where they were pronounced dead. The court has set another hearing for the accused on Friday to further discuss the case.

This incident brings to light ongoing concerns about road safety, especially involving young and unlicensed drivers. Authorities are emphasizing the necessity of proper driver education and recommended community discussions about safe driving to help prevent such tragedies. The hope is that increased awareness and responsible driving habits can lead to a significant reduction in road fatalities, ultimately protecting lives in the community.
