A tragic incident in New Plymouth has resulted in the death of an individual who was trapped inside their vehicle following a collision with a residential property. Authorities reported that the crash occurred at approximately 9:15 AM on Riverside Drive in Merrilands.

Initially, Fire and Emergency Services had indicated that the singular occupant of the car had been rescued, and there were no further injuries reported. However, it later emerged that the driver, who became trapped beneath the house, unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. Additionally, someone inside the home was transported to Taranaki Base Hospital with moderate injuries.

Rescue efforts were complicated by the position of the vehicle, requiring firefighters to utilize specialized equipment for several hours to extricate the car. Power lines were also downed in the accident, contributing to the difficulty of the operation as emergency teams navigated around fallen wires.

St John Ambulance dispatched three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and an operations manager to the scene, reflecting the severity of the incident. Police have confirmed that Riverside Drive is currently closed to traffic as emergency services manage the situation. Motorists in the region are advised to avoid the area and anticipate delays.
