A tragic incident occurred in New Plymouth, where one person lost their life after becoming trapped in their vehicle following a collision with a house. The accident took place on Riverside Drive in Merrilands around 9:15 AM, according to local police reports.

Initially, emergency services, including Fire and Emergency, believed they had successfully rescued the driver, who was the only occupant of the car. Unfortunately, it was later confirmed that the driver died from their injuries. A resident inside the house sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital for treatment.

Emergency responders faced challenges in extracting the vehicle due to its precarious position under the house, which took several hours to address. Additional complications arose as power lines were knocked down during the crash, further obstructing access to the driver.

St John dispatched three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and an operations manager to the scene, while the police closed the road for safety and recovery operations. Motorists in the area were advised to avoid the site and anticipate delays.

This unfortunate incident highlights the critical importance of road safety and the unpredictable nature of accidents. As investigators work to understand the specifics surrounding the crash, our thoughts are with the families of those affected during this difficult time.
