A family in Lautoka is reeling after their flat was destroyed in a fire on Nasoki Street yesterday afternoon. The family, still grappling with the shock of the incident, chose not to comment.
Witnesses in the neighborhood expressed their sympathy and relief that no one was injured during the fire. The National Fire Authority (NFA) responded quickly, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby houses.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane reported that firefighters arrived at the scene at 12:03 PM to find a three-flat structure made of concrete and wood completely engulfed in flames.
“They promptly established a water supply to control the fire’s spread toward neighboring homes just meters away,” Mr. Sowane stated.
The fire was extinguished with additional assistance from a fire hydrant at Vitogo Parade, with firefighters remaining on site until 4 PM to manage any remaining hotspots.
The property, owned by a 70-year-old woman, suffered total structural damage, affecting two of the three flats that were occupied by tenants. The total cost of the damage has not yet been assessed.
