Tragic Assault: Man Charged with Murder After Elderly Victim’s Death

A 40-year-old man, Netani Toma, has been remanded following allegations that he fatally assaulted a 70-year-old man last Saturday in Suva. During his appearance before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza, Toma was charged with one count of murder.

The court proceedings revealed that Toma was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, which took place at the Namadai settlement in Namadi Heights. The elderly victim sustained severe injuries and was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away on Tuesday.

The case has been adjourned to November 22 for its first mention in the High Court. Additionally, Toma has been informed of his right to apply for bail in the High Court.

This tragic event highlights the issue of violence and its consequences within communities.
