The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users to exercise vigilance and caution following the tragic death of a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi. The incident occurred when the boy was reportedly thrown from a moving vehicle, which allegedly encountered potholes that led to this unfortunate event.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed that this loss of life was preventable and emphasized the urgent need for adherence to road safety principles. He urged drivers to maintain heightened awareness and demonstrate responsible driving behaviors, especially when encountering challenging road conditions such as potholes.

“Safety begins with responsible driving,” Rokosawa stated, highlighting the driver’s significant role in ensuring the safety of passengers. He advised drivers to reduce their speed and drive cautiously on uneven surfaces to mitigate risks, as well as to avoid overloading their vehicles and ensure that all passengers are secured in designated areas.

Rokosawa pointed out that understanding the limitations of driving quickly on rough or unfamiliar roads is crucial, reiterating that all drivers must recognize their responsibility to maintain road safety and comply with laws.

He called for a nationwide shift in mindset towards a commitment to road safety. Drivers must understand that their actions can lead to life-changing consequences, and reckless driving should not be tolerated, regardless of the type of road.

In addition, Rokosawa highlighted the essential role that passengers play in promoting safety. He stated that it is not solely the driver’s responsibility to adhere to road regulations; passengers must also contribute by avoiding risky behaviors that could distract the driver or compromise safety.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of shared responsibility on our roads. By fostering a culture of safety among both drivers and passengers, there is hope for a future where such tragedies are significantly reduced.

In summary, the LTA’s call to action seeks to enhance awareness and responsibility among road users, reinforcing that a collective commitment to safety can lead to safer roads for everyone.
