Road users in Tavua are being urged to prioritize vigilance and responsibility following a tragic accident that claimed the life of a Year 9 student. The incident occurred yesterday morning as the victim was traveling by bus from Waikubukubu to Tavua town. After the bus reached a designated stop around 7 am, the boy disembarked to allow other passengers to exit. Tragically, as the bus began to move, he ran after it, lost his footing, and fell, resulting in a fatal accident.
The Chief Executive of the Land Transport Authority, Irimaia Rokosawa, expressed deep sorrow regarding this incident, marking it as a heart-wrenching reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety practices. This month alone has seen the loss of two young lives on the roads, emphasizing the pressing nature of the situation.
Rokosawa highlighted several critical points, including the need for Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers to ensure they do not pick up or drop off passengers in unsafe areas like the middle of the road. He urged parents and guardians to engage in discussions with their children about road safety. Furthermore, he called upon all drivers to be responsible and for pedestrians to remain alert, as even a moment’s carelessness can lead to lasting sorrow.
This incident resonates deeply, especially considering a recent tragic case in Nadi, where a 12-year-old student lost his life after being thrown from a moving vehicle. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, remarked on the importance of driver responsibility and the constant challenges of ensuring safety on the roads, especially during peak times and festivities.
Authorities are hopeful that increased community awareness and engagement will lead to safer road practices. By fostering a culture of responsibility and vigilance, it is possible to prevent future tragedies and protect the lives of vulnerable road users, particularly children. Community involvement and collective efforts from both drivers and pedestrians are crucial in making roads safer for everyone.
