The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has urged all road users to prioritize vigilance and responsibility after the tragic death of a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi, who was reportedly thrown from a moving vehicle. This incident, which occurred on Thursday, is believed to have happened when the vehicle hit potholes, resulting in the boy being ejected onto the road.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed that this unfortunate loss of life could have been prevented and reiterated the urgency of adhering to road safety measures. He stressed the importance of drivers being aware of their surroundings and exercising caution, especially on roads with potholes or uneven surfaces.

“Safety begins with responsible driving; drivers have a significant responsibility for the safety of all passengers,” Rokosawa stated. He emphasized that when dealing with challenging road conditions, reducing speed and driving carefully are essential to mitigating risks.

He also highlighted the necessity of ensuring passenger safety, urging drivers to avoid overloading their vehicles and to secure passengers in designated seating areas. The CEO reminded drivers that their speed often dictates their level of control, especially on rough terrains.

Rokosawa called for a nationwide commitment to road safety, emphasizing that reckless driving can lead to life-changing consequences. He stated, “Whether on busy highways or quiet streets, there is no place for reckless driving.”

Additionally, he noted that passengers also play a crucial role in ensuring safety. They should refrain from encouraging dangerous practices, such as riding in unsafe areas of a vehicle or distracting the driver. All individuals in a vehicle share the responsibility for safe travel.

This tragic incident serves as a critical reminder of the collective responsibility that drivers and passengers have towards road safety. By fostering a culture of caution and accountability, future accidents can be avoided.

In light of this unfortunate event, there is hope that increased awareness and adherence to road safety measures will lead to safer journeys for all. Communities can come together to advocate for safer roads and better driving practices, ultimately aiming to prevent such tragedies in the future.
