Tragic Accident Raises Alarm on Road Safety in Nasinu

A man in his 60s tragically lost his life in an accident in Nasinu last night. According to police reports, the victim was crossing Yasiyasi Road near the Valelevu roundabout when he was struck by a bus driven by a man in his 50s. Emergency services rushed the victim to the Valelevu Health Centre, where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

As investigations into the incident continue, a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, pointed out that recent days have seen an increase in serious road accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries. He expressed concern that despite ongoing efforts to promote road safety awareness, many drivers and pedestrians remain complacent about safety practices.

This year, the road death toll has reached eight, a notable drop from the 17 fatalities reported during the same period last year. Divuana emphasized that half of this year’s deaths were linked to speeding, with others resulting from careless driving, pedestrian faults, and improper overtaking. He reiterated the importance of making informed decisions on the road, urging all users to take responsibility and adhere to safety measures.

In a positive note, the decrease in road fatalities this year highlights the potential impact of heightened awareness regarding road safety, indicating that community efforts and education can indeed foster safer road conditions. Reducing accidents and saving lives remains a collective goal, and with ongoing attention to safety practices, there is hope for further improvements in the future.
