The Fiji Police Force has issued a stern warning about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to severe injuries or fatalities. This comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Waitolu, Naitasiri, where two men, aged 21 and 45, lost their lives in a road accident on Wednesday afternoon.
Traffic Director Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana reported that both men were allegedly under the influence of alcohol and became involved in an altercation that spilled onto the main road. They were subsequently struck by a bus driven by a 30-year-old man. The 21-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival at Vunidawa Hospital, while the 45-year-old succumbed to his injuries at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital the following morning.
Divuana emphasized that the accident could have been prevented if the victims had not let alcohol impair their judgment. He highlighted the broader implications of alcohol consumption, noting that it poses a danger to all road users, including drivers, passengers, riders, and pedestrians.
“Be responsible. We cannot stress enough the need to be responsible and take responsibility for your actions,” Divuana stated. With the holiday season approaching, he noted the tragedy affects two families deeply, who are now grieving their losses so close to Christmas. The police have long warned about the risks associated with alcohol, as it can significantly slow reaction times and cloud decision-making regarding personal safety.
As a positive note, the national road death toll currently stands at 58, a decrease from 74 during the same period last year, indicating potential improvements in road safety awareness.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible alcohol consumption, particularly during festive seasons, when celebrations may lead to increased risks on the roads. It is vital for individuals to prioritize their safety and the safety of others by making wise choices.
