Tragic Accident Claims Young Life in Nadi

A tragic incident occurred yesterday when a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi, lost his life after being ejected from a moving vehicle. The young boy was among several youths riding in the back of a carrier traveling along Natadola, when the vehicle hit a series of potholes. This unfortunate circumstance caused him to be thrown from the vehicle, landing on the roadway.

Immediately following the accident, the boy was taken to Sigatoka Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu expressed deep sorrow over the event, emphasizing the persistent issue of road safety during the festive season. “Despite our ongoing efforts to promote safety on the roads and maintain police presence, such incidents occur due to a lack of responsibility from some drivers,” ACP Driu stated. He acknowledged the difficulty for police to monitor every road and continuously remind drivers to prioritize safety.

The student’s body has been transferred to Sigatoka Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

It is a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the responsibility of drivers, especially during busy times of the year. This tragedy has sparked discussions about the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and better awareness campaigns. A collective effort can lead to enhanced safety measures, ultimately preventing similar incidents in the future.

This sad event also highlights the urgent need for community awareness about safe transport practices, especially for young passengers. By advocating for better road safety protocols and an emphasis on passenger safety, we can hope to foster a future where such tragedies are less frequent.
