A woman in her 70s tragically lost her life in a motor vehicle accident on the Viseisei bypass road yesterday. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the deceased was a passenger in a car driven by a 36-year-old woman who is now the suspect in the case.
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect lost control of her vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a post. The force of the impact caused the car to swing back onto the road, where it struck another vehicle.
SSP Divuana noted that the suspect is currently receiving treatment at Lautoka Hospital, while the driver of the second vehicle and his passenger escaped without injuries.
He emphasized that speeding is believed to be a contributing factor in this incident and urged drivers to adhere to speed limits for the safety of all road users. The current road death toll stands at 37, a decrease from 60 fatalities during the same period last year.
