A tragic incident occurred yesterday involving a 12-year-old boy from Sabeto, Nadi, who lost his life after being ejected from a moving vehicle. Reports indicate that the child was one of several young people riding in the back of a carrier truck while traveling through Natadola. The vehicle hit some potholes, which caused the boy to be thrown from the back and land on the asphalt road.

He was quickly transported to Sigatoka Hospital for medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, expressed his sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the importance of road safety, especially during the festive season. He noted that despite ongoing police efforts to promote safe driving, some drivers still fail to act responsibly. ACP Driu acknowledged the limitations of police presence on the roads, stating that it is impossible to monitor every vehicle continuously.

The boy’s body is currently at Sigatoka Hospital, awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened awareness and commitment to road safety, particularly during busy travel periods. Communities are encouraged to prioritize safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future and to ensure the protection of vulnerable road users, especially children.
