A post-mortem examination has been carried out on a farmer who passed away while in the custody of the Savusavu Police Station on Thursday. Marika Radua, a resident of Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, reportedly died on Tuesday following an alleged assault by another inmate in the cell block.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the Northern region, confirmed that an investigation has been initiated by a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). “Once the CID officers complete their investigation, we will release further information,” stated SSP Baledrokadroka.
According to an earlier statement by the Fiji Police Force, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has instructed the CID Headquarters to look into the incident. After sustaining injuries, Mr. Radua was rushed to Savusavu Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Marika Sade, an advisory councillor from Naviavia Village, shared details indicating that Mr. Radua was apprehended early on Tuesday morning for allegedly setting a family home ablaze at around 3 am. The situation has taken a toll on his family; his mother is currently traumatized, having lost both her home and her son in the same week. She is now staying with relatives outside the village for support.
This tragic incident underscores the importance of thorough investigations in custodial deaths to ensure accountability and justice. As the community grapples with the loss, there is hope that the ongoing investigation will bring clarity and support to the grieving family. Further updates from the police may provide some insight into the events that led to this unfortunate outcome.
