A one-year-old child, believed to have been subjected to physical abuse, has died, prompting police to charge a 30-year-old man in Cunningham last week.
On October 17, 2024, medical officials reported to Totogo Police that a child was pronounced dead at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The police became involved because the victim exhibited visible injuries consistent with assault.
Further investigations revealed that the accused, who is the partner of the child’s mother, had a prior history of abusive behavior. Additionally, police discovered that the accused had allegedly assaulted the victim’s three-year-old brother, who was found at the home with noticeable injuries.
Police consulted with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and subsequently charged the man with one count of murder, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one count of an act intended to cause grievous harm. He is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
