A tragic accident occurred yesterday afternoon in Wainibokasi, resulting in the death of a young man in his 20s following an explosion involving a diving gas tank. The explosion took place while a co-worker was attempting to use a grinder to cut the empty tank, leading to debris striking the victim and causing fatal injuries.
Emergency responders promptly transported the victim, along with his co-worker and another employee who sustained injuries during the incident, to the Wainibokasi Health Centre. Due to the severity of their conditions, they were later transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
The police have initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion.
This incident is reminiscent of another severe workplace accident reported recently, where a young man suffered fatal injuries in a fire while performing maintenance on a yacht in Nadi. Similar to this situation, that incident also involved an explosion leading to serious injuries for both workers involved.
As investigations continue into these tragedies, it highlights the importance of safety protocols in workplaces involving potentially hazardous equipment or materials. There is hope that through these investigations and the sharing of experiences, preventative measures can be implemented to ensure the safety of workers in the future.
