Tragedy Strikes: Young Girl Swept Away in River Crossing

Spread the love

A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while crossing the Waisomi river. She was with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt after a trip to collect edible lady fern when the tragedy unfolded.

The village’s Turaga ni koro notified the Police about the incident. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, reported that three officers were dispatched to aid in the search efforts yesterday. Unfortunately, as night fell and adverse weather conditions persisted, the search had to be paused, but is set to resume today.

In light of this unfortunate event, ACP Driu emphasized the critical importance of parental supervision, especially during school breaks, urging parents to devote more time to their children instead of attending social gatherings.

This situation serves as a poignant reminder of the potential dangers posed by natural elements, particularly to young children. It highlights the necessity for parents to prioritize safety and supervision to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from occurring in the future.

We hope that the search efforts yield positive results and that the community comes together to support one another during this difficult time.
