A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while crossing the Waisomi River. The child was with seven other youngsters and her 32-year-old aunt after they had gathered edible lady ferns.

The police were alerted to the situation by the Turaga ni koro (village head) of Naituvatuvavatu. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, stated that three police officers were dispatched to assist in the search efforts. Unfortunately, the search was halted at night due to darkness and inclement weather but is set to resume today.

In light of this incident, ACP Driu emphasized the importance of parental supervision, particularly during the school break. He urged parents to be more vigilant and proactive in ensuring children are kept safe, highlighting the necessity of spending quality time with them rather than attending gatherings.

This incident underscores a critical reminder about child safety during holiday periods. By reinforcing parental involvement and attentiveness, communities can work towards preventing such tragedies in the future. It serves as a call to action for caregivers to prioritize safety and supervision of children in potentially hazardous environments.
