A family in Nadroga is grieving the tragic loss of Sakenasa Rakaira, who drowned last week in the bay near Muka Village. The 26-year-old father of two went diving for fish after returning from his construction job on Thursday. Unfortunately, he encountered strong currents, which swept him away as he attempted to free himself.
According to his uncle, Sakiusa Koroicivi, Rakaira had been missing since 8 PM on Thursday, and after an extensive search, his body was recovered on Saturday afternoon. Rakaira leaves behind two young children, ages three and four, and had established a home in the village with his family.
Divisional Police Commander West, Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, confirmed that Rakaira had gone diving with a workmate, who advised him to stay in shallow waters due to the lack of proper fishing gear. When the workmate looked back, he noticed Rakaira being pulled away by the current and attempted to assist, but the conditions were too treacherous.
Tragically, this incident has contributed to a rising drowning death toll, which now stands at 53—a figure that is two more than the same period last year.
While this situation is undoubtedly heartbreaking, it highlights the importance of water safety and awareness for those engaging in activities near the ocean. Communities can be strengthened by discussions around precautions, proper gear, and support networks for families affected by such tragedies.
Though the loss is profound, the love and memory of Sakenasa Rakaira will continue to resonate within his family and community. It serves as a reminder to cherish every moment spent with loved ones while advocating for safer practices in aquatic environments.
