The tragic death of Josateki Sadrugu, a 26-year-old father of three, has left his family and the residents of Vio Island in Lautoka in shock. The incident occurred early yesterday morning as he and three other islanders returned from a spear-diving trip.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that details are limited at this time, stating, “Upon returning from fishing, they crashed into a pilot boat and the captain died.” Sadrugu’s aunt, Bale Rainima, shared the community’s sorrow, detailing how her nephew had planned to supply fish for a village hall opening that day. Rainima recounted their last meeting on Monday, when they discussed contributions for the event.
“We were waiting for the fish at Lautoka jetty, and when I saw a crowd with police officers around a boat, I knew something had gone wrong. It was devastating to learn of his passing,” she reflected. Rainima emphasized Sadrugu’s character, describing him as kind-hearted and diligent, who engaged in spear diving to provide for his young family.
Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau stated that the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is investigating the incident to uncover the circumstances surrounding it.
