The tragic loss of two young lives, Pisawaqa Sirovoama, 20, and Meri Nadaba, 25, in a road accident has left their families and friends devastated and has increased the concern regarding road safety. The accident occurred early Saturday morning along the Queens Highway at Kulukulu Sigatoka when a vehicle, allegedly driven by an intoxicated individual, failed to navigate a turn and collided with an electric power pole.

The vehicle was carrying four individuals—two males and two females. As a result of this accident, two passengers lost their lives, while one remains hospitalized at Aspen Hospital, and another has since been released.

In the wake of this incident, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, who oversees Traffic and Transport Control for the Fiji Police Force, expressed deep sorrow at the occurrence of two fatal accidents in just 24 hours. He emphasized the importance of safety and responsible driving, urging all motorists to prioritize the safety of their passengers and the community.

Mereani Qarikau, a close friend and colleague of Meri Nadaba, shared her shock and sorrow over the loss. She recounted their last conversation, which took place the night before the accident, expressing her disbelief at receiving the devastating news of her friend’s passing.

Rosi Tagilala, a cousin of both victims, also conveyed her family’s grief. She highlighted the close kinship between the two, noting that they were first cousins from Bua, Vanua Levu. The family is struggling to cope with such an early loss, deeply affected by the suddenness of their deaths.

Statistics reveal that the current road death toll has risen to 61 this year, a slight decrease from 76 during the same timeframe last year. This underscores the ongoing challenges faced in promoting road safety in the region.

In light of this tragedy, it is crucial for communities to come together, fostering a greater awareness of road safety and the importance of responsible driving behavior. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the vital need for vigilance on the roads.
