Two tragic accidents were reported in the Western Division early yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving others in critical condition. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana provided details about the incidents that occurred in Lautoka.

The first accident took place shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old driver. He was navigating along Barara flat towards Nadi when he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. The driver and three passengers were immediately transported to Lautoka Hospital, where the driver was pronounced dead. Two of the passengers are currently stable in the hospital, while the third has been discharged.

The second incident, thought to be a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 am on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who quickly took him to Lautoka Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana stated that traffic investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.

In a related note, a serious accident also happened this morning in Wailada, Lami, where a 22-year-old suffered serious injuries after his vehicle collided with a trailer of a parked truck. The victim was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains hospitalized.

Currently, the road death toll stands at 50, a decrease compared to 71 deaths during the same period last year.

While these incidents are tragic, it is encouraging to note that the overall road fatalities have decreased compared to previous years. This could be an indication that awareness and safety measures are having a positive effect on road conditions. As investigations continue, it is essential for the community to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the roads to prevent such incidents in the future.

Summary: Two fatal accidents occurred in Lautoka, resulting in the deaths of two men, with ongoing investigations looking to uncover further details. Although these incidents are tragic, the decrease in road fatalities compared to last year presents a glimmer of hope for enhanced safety measures.
