Authorities reported two tragic accidents in the Western Division early yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of life and serious injuries. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana detailed the incidents occurring in Lautoka.
The first accident took place shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that while he was driving along Barara Flat towards Nadi, he lost control of his vehicle, which veered off the road. The man, along with three passengers, was transported to Lautoka Hospital; however, despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. Two of the passengers are currently in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.
The second incident, which is suspected to be a hit-and-run, occurred post-3am on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who immediately took him to Lautoka Hospital, but he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana noted that traffic investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved.
In a further alarming event in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old driver sustained severe injuries after crashing into a trailer of a parked truck. He has been hospitalized at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Despite these unfortunate events, SSP Divuana highlighted that the overall road death toll currently stands at 50, a decrease compared to 71 during the same time last year, which indicates progress in road safety measures.
As investigations continue into these incidents, it’s crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution on the roads to prevent further tragedies. Community awareness and adherence to traffic regulations can play a significant role in reducing accidents moving forward.
