Two tragic accidents occurred yesterday morning in Lautoka, resulting in the loss of life and injuries. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the incidents unfolded in the early hours of the day.
The first accident took place shortly after midnight when a 38-year-old man lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara Flat in the direction of Nadi. Unfortunately, he veered off the road, and despite being rushed to Lautoka Hospital along with three other passengers, he succumbed to his injuries. Two of the passengers are in stable condition, while one has since been discharged from the hospital.
The second incident, which appears to be a hit-and-run, occurred shortly after 3 a.m. along Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby, who immediately transported him to Lautoka Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana indicated that traffic investigators are currently seeking information regarding the vehicle involved in this case.
In a broader context, it’s notable that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 during the same period last year. This may suggest that awareness and safety measures in road traffic are having a positive impact overall.
As we reflect on these unfortunate events, it serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety for all drivers and passengers, urging them to remain vigilant to prevent further tragedies.
