Two tragic accidents took place in the Western Division yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, both incidents occurred in Lautoka during the early hours.

The first accident, which happened shortly after midnight, claimed the life of a 38-year-old man. It is reported that while driving on Barara flat towards Nadi, the victim lost control of his vehicle, causing it to go off the road. He and three other passengers were swiftly transported to Lautoka Hospital, but sadly, the man later succumbed to his injuries. Among the passengers, two remain hospitalized in stable condition, while one has been discharged.

The second incident appears to be a hit-and-run, occurring around 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby, who immediately took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana stated that traffic investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.

In a separate serious incident in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old man sustained significant injuries after crashing his vehicle into the trailer of a parked truck. He was transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Currently, the road death toll stands at 50, a notable decrease compared to 71 during the same period last year, indicating efforts may be paying off in reducing road fatalities.

It is a tragic reminder of the dangers present on the roads, but the community and authorities are working diligently to enhance road safety, ensuring that everyone can travel more securely in the future.
