A devastating incident in Malolo, Nadi, has left the family and community grieving after the tragic deaths of 41-year-old couple Artika Kumari and Latchman Krishna. On Friday morning, Ms. Kumari was discovered deceased in their home, while it is alleged that Mr. Krishna took his own life outside. Initial investigations are leaning towards a murder-suicide scenario, as reports suggest Mr. Krishna may have murdered his wife before ending his own life.

The couple leaves behind a nine-year-old daughter, who reportedly witnessed a heated argument between her parents earlier in the day. Concerned for her safety, she sought assistance from a neighbor before leading her uncle, Rajesh Krishna, to the horrifying scene. Rajesh, who is also Latchman’s twin brother, expressed deep sorrow and described the emotional turmoil surrounding their family, particularly as the couple had faced escalating issues, including a police report made by Ms. Kumari against her husband for assault just the day before the tragic events unfolded.

Artika’s sister, Aska, shared that their last conversation, which occurred just prior to the incident, revealed the problems in her sister’s marriage, highlighting the critical conversations they had about these issues. She voiced her disbelief at the heartbreaking news, emphasizing the bond they shared.

In response to this tragic event, Senior Superintendent of Police, Iakobo Vaisewa, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding their deaths. He underscored the importance of addressing mental health concerns and the need for open dialogues within families and communities to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents in the future.

This tragedy not only highlights the urgent need for mental health resources but also emphasizes the necessity for supportive community frameworks. As loved ones and the broader community grapple with this profound loss, it is hoped that the painful experience of Artika Kumari and Latchman Krishna can serve as a catalyst for greater awareness, empathy, and action towards supporting families amid crises, ultimately aiming to avert similar tragedies in the future.
