A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in Naituvatuvavatu Village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River. The young girl was with her 32-year-old aunt and seven other children, returning from a foraging trip for edible lady fern when the mishap occurred.
The local Turaga ni Koro reported the incident to the police. In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu revealed that three officers were dispatched to the scene to aid in the search efforts. Unfortunately, the operation was suspended due to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions but is scheduled to resume today.
In light of this tragedy, ACPO Driu emphasized the necessity of parental oversight, especially during the school holidays. He urged parents to be more responsible and engage closely with their children, rather than attending gatherings that may detract from their supervision.
This event serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety, particularly in natural surroundings where dangers can arise unexpectedly. It highlights the need for communities to come together in ensuring the well-being of their children, fostering a culture of awareness and care.
As the search continues, there remains hope that the community and authorities will work diligently to bring the situation to a positive resolution.
