A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu Village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River. The incident took place as she, along with her 32-year-old aunt and seven other children, was returning from foraging for edible lady fern.

The Turaga ni Koro of Naituvatuvavatu Village reported the incident to the police. In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu shared that three police officers were dispatched to assist in the search. Unfortunately, the operation was halted due to poor visibility and challenging weather conditions, but the search efforts are set to resume today.

ACPO Driu emphasized the critical need for parental supervision, especially during school holidays, urging parents to be more diligent and attentive to their children.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of safety and vigilance, particularly during times when children are out of school. The community’s efforts and the police’s commitment to finding the young girl reflect a strong support system, showcasing the importance of family and community in facing tragedies together.

In summary, the disappearance of the young girl highlights the need for increased parental awareness and safety measures during recreational outings. It is hoped that this incident will foster a stronger community approach to child safety as the search continues.
