The Office of the Prime Minister has confirmed that one of its official vehicles was involved in a tragic accident yesterday outside Nausori, resulting in the deaths of two men. The government has expressed its deepest condolences to the families impacted by this unfortunate event and has committed to cooperating fully with police investigations.

Reports indicate that a 17-year-old boy, allegedly the son of an Assistant Minister, has been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the accident. It is claimed that he took the vehicle’s keys without permission while his father was asleep and drove the vehicle along Bau Road, where he struck the two victims. After the collision, the teenager reportedly fled the scene but later communicated details of the incident to his father, who then informed the authorities.

The ongoing investigation has raised concerns regarding road safety and the responsibilities of guardians regarding young, unlicensed drivers. Similar incidents have highlighted the urgent need for public discussions about safe driving, particularly concerning minors. Just hours before this tragic incident, two other men lost their lives in a separate accident on Wailoaloa Road, further underscoring the pressing need for increased road safety measures.

Authorities are emphasizing the importance of responsible driving behaviors and community engagement in addressing these issues. There’s hope that greater awareness and education can contribute to reducing road fatalities, and ultimately foster safer driving practices among young individuals. As the investigation continues, it is hoped that lessons learned will lead to meaningful changes in road safety awareness.
