Tragedy struck in New Plymouth when a vehicle collided with a house on Riverside Drive, leading to the death of the car’s driver. The incident occurred around 9:15 AM, prompting a swift response from local emergency services.
Initially, Fire and Emergency reported that the sole occupant of the car was rescued without injury, while a resident in the house sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Taranaki Base Hospital. Unfortunately, as responders worked to extract the vehicle, it was confirmed that the driver was trapped under the house, ultimately succumbing to the situation.
Removing the car proved challenging, as it took several hours and required a fire truck due to its precarious positioning. The crash also caused nearby power lines to fall, complicating rescue efforts and leading to power outages in the area.
Emergency crews, including three ambulances and a rapid response unit from St John, promptly arrived on the scene. As a precaution, police have closed the surrounding road, advising motorists to avoid the area to alleviate delays.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and dangers associated with road safety. It’s a tragic event that highlights the importance of awareness while driving and adherence to safety protocols, particularly in residential areas.
While the community mourns this loss, it may also serve as an opportunity for local authorities and organizations to emphasize road safety initiatives and emergency preparedness, aiming to prevent future tragedies.
