A family in Nadroga is mourning the tragic loss of Sakenasa Rakaira, a 26-year-old father of two, who drowned in the bay off Muka Village last week. According to his uncle, Sakiusa Koroicivi, Rakaira had just returned from work and went diving for fish when the accident occurred.
Koroicivi explained that strong currents swept Rakaira away while he was diving. He likely attempted to free himself from the powerful waters but became exhausted. After being reported missing on Thursday night around 8 PM, his body was found on Saturday afternoon around 12 PM.
Described as a hardworking individual, Rakaira leaves behind two young children, aged three and four, and a home in the village. Following a postmortem, the family prepared for his burial as advised by local authorities.
Divisional Police Commander West, Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, confirmed the incident, revealing that Rakaira was diving with a friend who had warned him to stay in shallower waters due to a lack of proper diving gear. Unfortunately, by the time the friend realized there was trouble, the currents had already swept Rakaira away, making rescue impossible.
This unfortunate event also highlights a worrying trend, as the drowning death toll has risen to 53, which is two more than the same period last year.
While the family’s loss is devastating, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of water safety and the precautions one should take before engaging in activities like diving. As communities come together to support grieving families, there is hope that increased awareness and safety measures can prevent future tragedies.
