Two tragic accidents took place yesterday morning in Lautoka, resulting in the loss of life. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, both incidents occurred in the early hours.
The first accident happened just after midnight, leading to the death of a 38-year-old man. Preliminary reports suggest that as he was driving towards Nadi along Barara Flat, he lost control of his vehicle, which veered off the road. He and three other passengers were rushed to Lautoka Hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Among the passengers, two remain hospitalized in stable condition while another was discharged.
SSP Divuana reported that the second accident, which is suspected to be a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and taken to Lautoka Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved in this tragic incident.
Despite the grim nature of these accidents, it’s important to note that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 during the same period last year, reflecting ongoing efforts for road safety. This highlights that awareness and preventive measures may be starting to have a positive impact.
As the community mourns the loss of life, it is crucial to remind everyone about the importance of road safety and responsible driving. Each life lost serves as a painful reminder of the need for vigilance on our roads.
