A tragic incident occurred in Lautoka on Thursday, resulting in the death of a man who was crushed by a truck. According to Fiji Police, the accident took place at the Tore Settlement shortly after midday. The victim, while fitting an excavator bucket, was struck by a reversing truck driven by a 44-year-old man. Emergency services transported the victim to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities will conduct a postmortem to determine the cause of death, and investigations are ongoing. This incident highlights ongoing road safety concerns in the region, which has seen recent increases in fatalities.

In a related context, several accidents have been reported in Lautoka this year, with an overall count of nine road fatalities to date, representing a decrease from 17 fatalities during the same period last year. This decline reflects the effectiveness of road safety measures and awareness campaigns aimed at preventing such tragedies. While this recent incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers on the road, the reduction in overall fatalities provides a hopeful indication that combined efforts to promote road safety are making an impact.

Continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols are essential to safeguard all road users and prevent future accidents.
