Neighbor's Fire Devastates Family: A Community in Shock

Tragedy Strikes: Kalabu Family Loses Everything in Alleged Arson Attack

A family from Kalabu is grappling with an immense loss after their home was allegedly burned down by a neighbor, leading to the destruction of their belongings valued at around $31,000. The incident occurred around 4:30 PM while the family was away, and when the primary earner, Parshu Ram, returned home at 4:45 PM, he discovered his residence completely engulfed in flames.

Ram, who works at the University of the South Pacific, described the traumatic experience of losing everything he had built over the past 11 years. He stated that the neighbor, reportedly inebriated, purchased benzine and ignited the fire without any apparent motive. “I am very frightened. I’ve lost everything I’ve collected in the past 11 years. I just don’t know why it happened,” Ram said, expressing confusion and sorrow, particularly as he had no prior conflicts with anyone in the community.

Currently, the Ram family is staying with friends while the wife and children have taken refuge with relatives. This tragic event not only highlights the hazards associated with fire but also underscores the need for community support in times of crisis.

Community members are encouraged to come together to assist the Ram family during this challenging period. While rebuilding may take time, interventions and solidarity from the community can offer them hope for recovery and a new beginning. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety in homes and the critical role of a supportive community during difficult times.
