The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) under the Ministry of Employment is currently looking into the unfortunate death of a Japanese tourist in Fiji. The 50-year-old man encountered difficulties while snorkeling in the waters near the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka, where he is believed to have drowned on November 4 at around 8 am.

Minister for Employment, Agni Deo Singh, stated that the visitor was swimming alone when the incident took place. Following the tragedy, the NOHSS has launched a thorough investigation to assess whether the hotel had implemented adequate systems and procedures for guest activities. This inquiry will include evaluating the level of supervision provided for such events and the protocols in place for rescue and evacuation in case of emergencies.

The NOHSS is collaborating with relevant authorities to gather medical and post-mortem examination reports from the police to aid in their investigation. Minister Singh emphasized the need for hotel management to identify potential hazards and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The NOHSS regularly inspects all workplaces in Fiji, including resorts, to ensure compliance with national safety regulations. Enforcement notices are issued for any identified shortcomings, requiring employers to take corrective actions.

This tragic incident sheds light on the importance of safety measures and protocols in tourist activities. It presents an opportunity for hotels and resorts in Fiji to reassess and enhance their safety standards, ultimately ensuring a safer environment for all guests.

In remembrance of the deceased, this investigation could pave the way for more robust safety regulations that may benefit future visitors and prevent similar occurrences from happening again.
