Tragedy Strikes in Lautoka: A Life Cut Short in a Road Collision

A tragic incident unfolded in Lautoka as 58-year-old Sudha Karan lost his life in a road accident near his childhood home in Naviyago on Thursday night. Mr. Karan, who had been visiting his elderly mother, Vimla Wati, was driving to a friend’s house when his vehicle collided with an oncoming bus along the Kings Highway. The crash was so severe that he died instantly at the scene.

His close friend Shiek Sahib expressed his heartache over the loss, recalling their last meeting just days before the accident. Mr. Karan had expressed his concern for his mother and requested his friend to look after her if anything were to happen to him. “His mother was everything to him,” Mr. Sahib stated. The last conversation between Mr. Karan and his mother took place Thursday morning, when he mentioned plans to purchase two gas cylinders before leaving for Australia on Monday.

Officials reported that Mr. Karan had been living in the United States for the past two decades, returning to Fiji to be with family. His untimely death has left his mother, who is 79 years old, heartbroken.

The police are currently investigating the accident. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to provide further details surrounding his death. This tragic event is a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding road safety. Recent statistics have indicated a decrease in road fatalities this year, from 17 deaths during the same period last year to just nine, highlighting some progress made in road safety initiatives.

While the circumstances surrounding Mr. Karan’s death are profoundly sorrowful, the overall decline in traffic-related fatalities suggests that community efforts toward enhancing road safety awareness may be slowly gaining traction. It is crucial for all drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to safety measures to prevent future tragedies on the roads.
