A 16-year-old boy has tragically become the latest victim of a road accident in Fiji. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the incident occurred on Korotari Road in Labasa just after 1 a.m. yesterday when the young driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle. The car veered off the road and struck a culvert.
Following the accident, the boy was rushed to Labasa Hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. SSP Divuana noted that the teenager was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license, and this factor will be investigated further.
This incident brings the current road fatality count in Fiji to 57, a decrease compared to 74 fatalities during the same time frame last year, indicating potential improvements in road safety awareness and enforcement.
It’s essential for authorities to continue raising awareness about safe driving practices, especially for young and inexperienced drivers. Programs focusing on education around licensing and road safety could prevent future tragedies, ensuring that roads are safe for everyone.
