Ilona Valette traveled to Fiji this week under heartbreaking circumstances for her first visit to the country, coming not for joy but to say farewell to her partner, Josaia Raisuqe. The 30-year-old rugby star tragically lost his life in an accident earlier this month while on his way to training.

Reflecting on her grief, Ilona spoke of their time together, saying, “This is my first time in Fiji. I never thought I would come here like this.” The couple had spent the last four years in France, nurturing plans for their future, including a conversation about building a house just before his untimely passing.

Josaia Raisuqe, who played for Castres Olympique and was also an Olympic silver medalist for Fiji, passed away after being struck by a train at a level crossing. His parents, Tevita and Mereani Raisuqe, traveled to France to pay their respects, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of their son and appreciation for the support from the rugby community.

Raisuqe’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Fijian rugby community, which is still mourning the loss of another young player, Sekove Tagicakiverata. Tributes from players and teammates have highlighted Raisuqe’s positive impact both on and off the pitch, where he was known for his powerful play and infectious smile.

His funeral will take place on Friday in his village in Lutu, Wainibuka, where the community will gather to remember the joy and love he brought to so many lives. The strong camaraderie within the rugby world during these challenging times is a testament to the bonds formed through shared experiences in the sport, providing hope and unity amidst the sorrow.

This article serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life but also underscores the legacy of love and memory that athletes like Josaia Raisuqe leave behind, inspiring future generations.
