The family of Ubayd Haider, a celebrated boxer from Fiji, has publicly expressed their need for clarity about the circumstances surrounding his tragic death. Haider, originally named Nathan Singh, succumbed to injuries following a fight on October 26 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, where he was involved in an intense bout for the IBO Asia Pacific Featherweight title. After losing by technical knockout to China’s Runqi Zhou, he collapsed en route to his changing room and was subsequently hospitalized for 16 days, during which he underwent brain surgery.

His father, Gyan Singh, a seasoned boxing trainer, described the heartbreaking loss as devastating for their family, given Haider’s potential as a promising athlete. As preparations for funeral proceedings are underway, Gyan affirmed his commitment to honoring his son’s Islamic faith and ensuring the appropriate final rites are conducted.

The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) has initiated an inquiry into the incident. This investigation, led by chairperson Pita Driti and supported by members Philip Hereniko and Adi Narayan, aims to uncover the events that led to Haider’s collapse, particularly in light of regulations that require a stretcher to be present at ringside before fights commence.

Runqi Zhou, Haider’s opponent, expressed his condolences on social media, highlighting Haider’s resilient spirit. He commented, “Rest In Peace to Ubayd Haider, he was a fighter until the end. Condolences and deepest sympathies to his family and the people of Fiji.”

Haider leaves behind his wife Helen and their two young children, who will always cherish the memories they created together in their five years of marriage. Helen expressed her gratitude for the time they shared, remarking on the beautiful gift of their children.

As the community mourns this loss, public viewing of Haider’s body is scheduled at FMF Gym, and the funeral is set to take place later today, followed by his burial in the Raralevu Muslim Cemetery.

This tragic incident not only brings to light the inherent risks involved in boxing but also serves as a poignant reminder of the need for strict adherence to safety protocols within the sport. Through the inquiry, the hope is that lessons will be learned to prevent such heart-wrenching events in the future, allowing the boxing community to honor Haider’s legacy and ensure the safety of its athletes.
