A family is mourning the loss of Kamenieli Varo, a father of five who is believed to have drowned in the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco, New South Wales, on Sunday. NSW Police received a report around 5:15 PM on November 3 about a 32-year-old man who had gone missing while swimming in the river. Emergency services, including police, ambulance, and rescue teams, conducted a thorough search at Middle Beach, Yanco, but were unable to locate him before darkness and hazardous river conditions forced them to suspend the operation around 8 PM.

The search resumed the following day, but as of now, Mr. Varo’s body has not yet been found. Friends reported that he was swept away by the river’s strong current, and despite their attempts to rescue him, they were unsuccessful.

Mr. Varo had relocated to Australia in 2022 through the National Employment Centre’s Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme and was expected to complete his four-year contract next year. His wife, Mere Dawai, shared her last conversation with him on the day of the incident, revealing that he had been excited about an upcoming family visit during Christmas. She described him as a caring and kind-hearted person who always sought to help others.

This tragic incident serves as a harsh reminder of the dangers of water activities, particularly in rivers with strong currents. The community is coming together to support the Varo family during this difficult time, showing the strength of human compassion in the face of loss. As search efforts continue, there is hope that Mr. Varo will soon be found, providing his family with the closure they desperately need.

In moments of tragedy, it is crucial to remember the vibrant lives that were lived and the love that endures beyond loss.
