Kamenieli Varo, a 32-year-old father of five, tragically disappeared while swimming in the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco, New South Wales, on Sunday, November 3. Local police received a report around 5:15 PM indicating that Varo was missing, prompting an urgent response from emergency services.

Rapidly mobilized, the Murrumbidgee Police District, along with NSW Ambulance, SES, and the Volunteer Rescue Association, conducted an extensive search operation. Unfortunately, their efforts were hampered by deteriorating light and hazardous river conditions, leading them to suspend the search by 8 PM. The search resumed the following day as hopes remained high for a successful recovery.

It is believed that Varo was swept under the water by the river’s strong current, leaving both friends and rescuers unable to assist him in time. Originally from Navoci Village in Nadi, Fiji, Varo had relocated to Australia in 2022 under a labor mobility scheme, with plans to complete his contract next year. His wife, Mere Dawai, shared details of their last conversation, revealing that he had gone out with friends for a picnic and was excited about spending Christmas with his family. This heart-wrenching situation is compounded by the fact that four of their children are still in primary school.

In her grief, Ms. Dawai expressed the pain of losing a kind-hearted husband who was devoted to his family and community. She mentioned that he had ambitions of building a new home for them after completing his time in Australia, underscoring the family’s aspirations for a brighter future.

Such incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers posed by natural water bodies and the importance of exercising caution while engaging in recreational activities. As the search continues, the community unites in offering support and condolences to Varo’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

In these moments of tragedy, communities have the opportunity to come together and provide strength and healing, showcasing the resilience of families in the face of adversity.
