A post-mortem examination has taken place for Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, who died earlier this week while reportedly in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. Radua passed away on Tuesday after allegedly being assaulted by another inmate in the cell block.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, confirmed that a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently looking into the matter. He mentioned that further statements will be provided once the investigation is completed.
According to an initial statement from the Fiji Police Force, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has directed CID officers to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Following the assault, police rushed Radua to Savusavu Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Marika Sade, an advisory councillor from Naviavia Village, noted that Radua was arrested early on Tuesday morning after allegedly setting a family house on fire at around 3 am. Sade shared that the situation has been particularly distressing for Radua’s mother, who has experienced the loss of both her home and her son in the same week. She is currently staying with relatives away from the village for support.
This tragic incident highlights the challenges faced within the justice system and the need for thorough investigations to ensure accountability and justice. It also serves as a reminder of the impact such events can have on families and communities.
The ongoing investigation offers hope that the circumstances surrounding Radua’s death will be examined carefully, providing clarity and potentially preventing future incidents.
