A post-mortem examination has been carried out on Marika Radua, a farmer who died while in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. The incident occurred on Tuesday, following an alleged assault by another prisoner within the cell block.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, confirmed that an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is underway. “Once CID officers complete their work, then we will be issuing another statement,” he noted.
Earlier in the week, the Fiji Police Force issued a statement regarding the scenario, indicating that Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has instructed CID officers at the headquarters to look into the matter. Authorities acted swiftly, transporting Mr. Radua to Savusavu Hospital, where he was sadly declared dead on arrival.
According to local advisory councillor Marika Sade, Mr. Radua was taken into custody around 6 AM on Tuesday, following an incident in which he reportedly set a family house ablaze at approximately 3 AM. The emotional toll on his mother has been profound, as she faces the trauma of losing both her home and her son in the same week. Currently, she is seeking refuge with relatives away from the village.
This tragic event has drawn attention to the need for improved conditions and monitoring within detention facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals in custody. In the wake of such incidents, it is essential for law enforcement agencies to act transparently and promptly, reinforcing public trust and accountability.
In sum, this incident reflects a critical moment for reviewing the protocols and investigative processes within the police system, aiming for justice and healing for affected families while ensuring such events are not repeated in the future.
