A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday for Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, who died on Tuesday while reportedly in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. The circumstances leading to his death involve an alleged assault by another inmate in the cell block.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, confirmed that a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently investigating the incident. SSP Baledrokadroka stated, “Once CID officers complete their work, then we will be issuing another statement.”

Earlier statements from the Fiji Police Force indicated that Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew had tasked CID Headquarters with looking into the situation. Police responded by taking Mr. Radua to Savusavu Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

The arrest occurred after Mr. Radua allegedly set fire to his family’s house early Tuesday morning, approximately at 3 a.m., and was taken into custody around 6 a.m. Following these events, Naviavia Village advisory councillor Marika Sade noted that Mr. Radua’s mother is experiencing trauma after losing both her home and her son in the same week, and she is currently staying with relatives outside the village.

This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns around prisoner treatment and safety, while also drawing attention to the psychological impacts on family members in such distressing situations. As the investigation unfolds, hopes are that it will lead to clarity and improvements in protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In summary, this incident serves as a somber reminder of the potential consequences of criminal actions, not only for individuals but also for their families and communities. The investigation’s outcomes may help foster changes that improve safety for all involved in the justice system.
