A family of five is grieving the loss of their 10-year-old son, Kiliaoni Lili Qalotaki, who tragically drowned in the Navua River. His body was recovered yesterday after he was swept away by fast-moving currents while swimming with friends in the Raiwaqa River on December 28.
Kiliaoni’s father, Pastor Semi Qalotaki, recounted the events leading to his son’s disappearance. Initially, Kiliaoni declined to swim but was eventually persuaded by friends, who assured him their mother would accompany them. Sadly, just moments later, they returned to say that he had been swept away by the river’s strong current.
The search for Kiliaoni lasted three days, involving family and local residents as well as police and members of the Fiji Navy. The heartbreaking ordeal ended with the recovery of his body, bringing a sense of closure to his grieving family.
Mr. Qalotaki reflected on his son’s personality, describing him as playful yet supportive of the church and a natural leader among his peers. The family had plans to celebrate the New Year in Suva, and Kiliaoni was especially excited about fireworks sent by relatives living abroad.
Pastor Qalotaki expressed gratitude for the support of local tourist ventures, River Tubing and Jewel of Fiji, who joined in the search efforts for his son. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, and a post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the fragility of life, but it also highlights the community’s strength and solidarity in times of sorrow. Families are encouraged to cherish their time together and take necessary precautions when engaging in recreational activities, especially in natural water settings.
In summary, while the beginning of the New Year has been marked by deep sorrow for the Qalotaki family, their faith and support from the community may provide a source of comfort during this difficult time.
